About Wampum

Greetings. Wampum has great meaning and is of great significance to what is now called North America. It is made from the quahog shell. The crafts you see on my site are made from the shell part of the quahog that me and my family gather from the waters of Massachusetts and Rhode Island. The quahog is a food source. The quahog we use is from the north east coast. We harvest the Quahog and consume the meat within and then use the shell to make Wampum jewelry so there is no waste.

I have been doing the silversmithing and have been vending at powwows for over 20 years. I learned how to gather the quahog and craft the wampum from my late mother when I was little and I learned to do silver work from my late friend chief Bill Lazore of Onondaga who was a great mentor for me, two special people who we all miss.

The shell is also used as it has always been used to make the cylindrical wampum beads that are used for strings and belts that are used for ceremonial purposes and record keeping of treaties, agreements, commemorative events and laws.

The Qualities and power of the wampum are derived from the Mother Earth blood the water who refreshes and purifies the Earth and the Sun who heats lights and gives energy to the Earth Mother and all things. It calms the nerves, relaxes the muscles, helps with emotion and helps to bring about peace and contentment.

All of my hand made products are designed by myself and many of these designs are made by no one else. Also all my products are made from 100% sterling silver unless otherwise specified.
